No Payments For 90 Days

Auto loans can be difficult to understand, especially when there are so many things you'll want to consider, the loan amount and the balance after the loan payment, the consequences of a missed payment, where to finance, what you can afford to pay monthly, and many other considerations. What are the benefits of making a deferred payment plan such as a 90-day no payment plan? Well, they’ll give you the opportunity to postpone payments on a vehicle.

Sounds great? Perhaps!

Always make sure you read the fine print. A postponed payment seems pretty great, but different dealerships mean different things and reading the details can - and will - make a huge difference on how wise it will be to put off the payment.

Different Dealership, Different Program

Markets have created offers that attract customers with poor credit. These aren't really great ideas, but if you do your due diligence you should be fine.

Postponing Payments But Not Interest

A majority of postponed payments don't usually give you a break from your car loan's interest. Automakers that have payments postponed, start collecting loan interest the moment you purchase the car instead of when you make your first payment.

The Amount? Well, think about this, a 60-month loan on $25,000 with a 4 percent interest. And if you chose to postpone your payment by 3 months, that'll add about $200 to your loan principal by the time make your first payment. You're not going to have to pay it up front because it normally gets transferred to another loan, but you'll eventually have to pay for it.

Zero Percent and No Interest

If you don't have good credit you probably won't qualify for those 'Zero Percent Interest for 90 days' specials, but let's say you do. This means postponing a payment won't cost you anything in interest, and if you keep all that car-payment money in your bank for about three months, you could have more money for mishaps on the road.

Having an interest-free loan postponement enables you a way to put the money you would've spent on your vehicle into one of your investments, and turning the payment towards something else could work in your favor.

No Payment(s)

A few programs will actually postpone payments by eliminating it. An example would be ‘Volvo's Wonder of Summer Event’, where they postponed your payment for a month by eliminating it. Basically, it pays off a cash incentive that's worth the amount of the first month's payment, and given you don't have to make any payments later - your 60-month loan will become a 59-month loan, and the 59-month loan remains unaffected.

Things You May Want to Look Out For

A payment waiver is usually rare and most postponement programs bill you an interest fee during your postponement time frame. Because vehicles usually lose most of their value early on, they risk putting you in a bad spot where you'll end up paying more money for your vehicle than what it's worth.
